Acupuncture has been effective in treating chronic and painful debilitating disorders, which have no clear explanation or origin. Many who are not experiencing disease also seek treatment to maximize their wellness and maintain balance. The greatest reason to begin acupuncture treatment is to cultivate vitality and radiant health and to stimulate the tremendous healing power of the body, mind, and spirit.

This highly effective system of medical care is based on natural laws, which govern the movement of vital life-giving energy, both in nature and in the body. This energy, called “chi”, moves through the body in precise channels supporting functions of the body, mind, and spirit. When the chi is moving dis-harmoniously, imbalance begins to surface in the form of symptoms like pain. To address the underlying cause of a condition, these symptoms are viewed in relationship to the totality of a person. The gentle insertion of hair-thin needles at specific points along the channels helps restore harmony.

Chinese herbal medicine is one of the main forms of treatment in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM’s written history stretches back at least 2,500 years. Although acupuncture had been the first Chinese medical modality to gain acceptance in the west, Chinese herbal medicine is quickly becoming one of the most popular and effective complementary therapies.

Chinese herbology compliments acupuncture treatments and in some cases is superior to acupuncture. Chinese herbal medicine is a poly-pharmacy, meaning multiple herbs are combined into one formula. By using this form of medicine the herbs synergistically work together to heighten the effect of each medicinal or counteract any undesirable effect. Patients find that results are achieved more quickly when acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are used together.

The Chinese materia medica (a pharmacological reference book used by TCM practitioners) contains hundreds of medicinal substances-primarily plants, but also some minerals and animal products-classified by their perceived action in the body. Different parts of plants such as the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds are used. Usually, herbs are combined in formulas and given as teas, capsules, tinctures, or powders.

At Awaken Wellness, we understand the importance of thorough communication between a client and therapist. In order for a session to be most effective, a client’s individual needs must be addressed. For this reason, a buffer time is worked into every appointment so a client never feels rushed off the table and always receives the full-time amount of massage that has been scheduled. Our therapists have training in a range of modalities and are compassionate to a client’s goals, performing a thorough intake before the massage, as well as offering suggestions to help alleviate any issues afterward.

Massage has been utilized as a form of therapy and healing for thousands of years. Though widely used and accepted in other cultures for centuries and sometimes millennia, massage has only fairly recently grown in popularity in the US. As familiarity with and understanding of this powerful tool of wellbeing spreads, it is quickly becoming a sought-after treatment, working its way into many settings, including medical offices and hospitals. Many individuals have already found it to be an important component of routine care and wellbeing, as well as a tool to assist in healing from injuries.

The benefits of massage range from the improvement of specific physiological functions to mental relaxation and emotional and stress relief. Some of the most commonly reported effects of massage include: decreases stress and anxiety; deep relaxation; fewer muscle spasms and cramping; improved circulation and lymph drainage, enhanced immune system, improved flexibility, and reduced scar tissue. Massage is an excellent tool for athletes, professional and casual, in training, pre-and post-event sessions, injury or event recovery, and general maintenance.

I’ve been working professionally in the health care field as a nurse since receiving my Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Seton Hall University over 30 years ago. In conjunction with nursing I am an acupuncturist, licensed by the State of Maryland and board certified through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) and a Chinese Herbalist.

I have successfully worked with patients suffering from a variety of ailments and conditions. My passion and specialty is working with patients who are experiencing pain. From my own experience with back and shoulder pain I chose to peruse continuing education in pain management and apply this knowledge to my practice.

To further expand my skills and knowledge of Oriental Medicine, I completed a 660 hour certification course in Chinese Herbal Medicine. I’m excited about the possibilities that this opens up for you. By adding this new dimension to my skills, I can now enhance you therapeutic results. This will enable you to reach your health goals quickly and completely.

In addition, I am certified in facial rejuvenation acupuncture. Different from cosmetic surgery this treatment enhances ones inner and outer beauty. By creating balance in the body, beauty appears on the face. Fine lines start to disappear, skin tones becomes even, the eyes brighten, and the face appears younger and healthier.

My commitment to you is to being your guide through your healing process. I will bring my knowledge of eastern and western medicine to focus on your needs and to support and enhance your own unique healing abilities.

Stephanie’s Story

My introduction to acupuncture was as a patient. I had hurt my shoulder at work and the pain persisted despite the medication and light exercise prescribed by my doctor. Since I had been curious, but skeptical, about acupuncture for some time, I decided to give it a try. I was impressed and amazed at the results, my shoulder began to heal. With additional treatments, the shoulder continued to improve until the pain and restricted motion it caused were no more than a faint memory. And there was more….

Not only did my shoulder heal, but I found that I was less anxious and better able to cope with some challenging issues in my professional and personal life. This experience was a wake up call to me, professionally. Not only did I appreciate acupuncture as a very remarkable and truly therapeutic medical procedure, I decided that I wanted to pursue it, in conjunction with my career as a nurse. I realized that, as an acupuncturist, I can work with you individually, and help you heal on more than just a physical level. Because of my experiences it became very clear to me that healing occurred on more than a physical level and through acupuncture I can help you access these other levels.

So, with 20 years of nursing experience behind me, I went back to school. I enrolled at the Tai Sophia Institute (TAI), the oldest accredited acupuncture school in the country, and completed my Master’s of Acupuncture degree in 2003.

I look forward to learning about you.

Experience has shown me how effective acupuncture can be for injuries, chronic pain and illnesses such as headaches, fertility disorders, digestive issues and many more. But perhaps more importantly, I have seen firsthand the effectiveness of Chinese Medicine for resolving the emotional and psychological impact these conditions can have on people.

My education in the structures and function of the physical body, the bio-mechanics of movement and exercise, and my work in physical therapy has prepared me to integrate the diagnostics and principles of western medicine into my practice of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine in ways that offer a bridge to both medical systems.

My work with patients begins with deep and attentive listening to their concerns. Truly effective treatments that bring about successful, long term results should always address issues of body, mind, and spirit and their connection to each other. Any illness or condition can have negative effects on a person’s emotional well-being, and their peace of mind. If these are not considered and addressed, then lasting resolution of the condition will not be achieved.

My undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology/Exercise Science with a Summa Cum Laude distinction. I was honored to be receive the National Student of the Year award for NASPE (National Association for Sports and Physical Education). I graduated from the Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH); with specialized training in fertility conditions, pain management and sports related injuries.

I am especially grateful for my education and training in Classical 5-Element acupuncture. This ancient system of healing utilizes the elemental natural laws that keep us in harmony with the cycles of day and night, and the cycle of the seasons. Balancing these elemental energies in our bodies allows for the maintenance of health and well-being for whatever stresses life presents to us.

Through this education and as I continue my studies, I have seen and experienced the impressive healing powers acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can bring to patients. The practice of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine is a lifetime endeavor. I am awed and honored by my personal and professional experiences which have shown me the limitless potential for healing and enhancing quality of life when one has the commitment, knowledge, and compassion to provide the best possible care to every patient, every day. This is the founding principle of my practice.

In addition to using energy medicine to treat conditions, Andrei is passionate about educating his patients on how to use and practice this for themselves. Andrei’s interest in the Healing arts started at a young age when he began martial arts training. He then went on to study yoga and meditation, which led him to pursue a career in Chinese Medicine. I received my license in Massage Therapy in 2000, shortly after graduating from the original Baltimore School of Massage. I have spent the last 22 years serving the Montgomery County area, helping clients improve their lives and wellbeing, while also learning so much from each of them. I still love the work and the positive impact that massage therapy has on one’s entire being. I do not have one specialty massage. I hon in on the clients’ needs and individualize each treatment. I incorporate many different modalities in each session, depending on the body’s need for that day- deep tissue, swedish, myofascial, trigger point, cupping, pre-natal, minor stretching- and more. I continue to learn and increase my bodywork knowledge and welcome feedback from my clients. Although my favorite areas to tackle are the back and the feet, I get great satisfaction in making a difference in people’s lives. I credit my family for encouraging me to do the work I was born to do, and my clients for reinforcing this is where I need to be.
